German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Female (spayed) : : Adult : : Large
GABBY ~4 years old. Good with dogs. Kids and Cats TBD. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only Big, bold, and beautiful! That is a good description of Miss Gabby! Gabby came to the rescue from a small rural shelter. She is a bit shy and insecure at times, but once she gets to know you she is a riot. Gabby is a big girl, and is bigger than most female shepherds. She is close to 80 pounds. Gabby has a beautiful coat and coloring, and the greatest smile. She has a mischievous glint in her eyes! Gabby is going to need a patient home, and a family that will let her gain her confidence slowly. She is friendly, but cautious of people until she gets to know you. Once she is comfortable with you, her funny personality comes out. She will follow you everywhere. She will sleep on the bed if you let her, and likes to vocalize and speak to you! Sometimes she will just wag her tail and bark at you, and then dart off to another part of the house (sometimes I wonder if she even knows what she is doing). She is quite funny! Gabby was a bit overwhelmed when she first arrived in the rescue. She was quiet as a peep in her crate and out of it. After about a week or so, she decided that she did not care for the crate arrangement, and promptly busted her way out. I have left her loose in the house, and she has done quite well. She is not destructive when given free roam. (I do make sure things that might tempt her, such as the trash can and food items are kept secure and away from her). She will counter surf when you are not watching! LOL I do not think she has separation anxiety, but I do think she does not like being confined to limited spaces. She does not like to be in a room by herself with the door closed. Gabby does well with other dogs after a few slow and supervised intros to monitor initial contact and energy levels. Gabby is what we like to call "socially awkward" with other dogs....she wants to play and be friendly, but she has no idea of how to interpret doggie behavior. She can play a bit rough, and is also a bit vocal initially, so it takes other dogs a while to get used to her. She does take verbal correction very easily, and while she still hovers and wants to engage in play/chase, she does tone it down. She likes a dog that will play chase and also wrestle/box/jump around with her. She has been introduced to all the resident and foster dogs, and plays well with several of them. She does best with dogs that are not too submissive. She will also be fine as an only dog I believe, but would encourage continued interaction with other dogs on a regular basis to prevent her from becoming reactive. Gabby is housebroken and rides well in the car. She likes to be comfortable, and will jump up on your bed or sprawl out on a dog bed depending on her mood. Gabby will need a fenced yard as she is currently reluctant to eliminate on leash. She is a big goofy girl with a great personality. She will be a wonderful addition to some lucky family. Gabby is HW positive and will be undergoing treatment at the beginning of June. Come meet her soon, she won't last long.
