Salem is a HUGE lovebug!! He loves everyone he meets and is instantly your best friend!! He absolutely ADORES children, the more little hands on him the better!! Salem will lay down and roll over for belly rubs in an instant!! He loves other dogs big, small, male, female, young, old doesn't matter all he sees is a new buddy!! Salem is great on leash, knows all the basic commands, is crate trained and housebroken and LOVES car rides!! Salem also does great out in public, he's very calm and mellow, nothing phases him. He stays calm in any environment. In the months I've had him I've never seen him startled by anything, not even a loud motorcycle suddenly starting up just feet away from him!!
An ideal home for Salem would be one with other dogs and/or young kids. He's great with small dogs and could undoubtedly share a home with one but it couldn't be his primary playmate. At 100+ lbs he needs a larger dog (40-50lbs +) to play and really be able to tussle with. While in my home he's had mainly other GSD's and Pit Bulls as playmates and has done great with them.
Salem also needs a firm leader with GSD experience, as sweet as he is, he will push and test boundaries and will take over if those rules and boundaries aren't consistently enforced. He's a big boy with medium energy a couple walks some fun play and a little obedience training daily is all he needs to keep him happy and out of trouble.
Salem has a THICK coat and sheds heavily, even by GSD standards. He will need to be brushed as often as possible, he LOVES it so its not an issue. Also be prepared to sweep and/or vacuum ALOT. There's Salem hair in nests all over my neighborhood ;)
Because of his size and coat Salem gets hot quickly temps over 75-80 is warm for him so outdoor activities during the day in our summer climate needs to be kept to a minimum. Early am and eve outings with just quick potty breaks and back inside to the AC during the heat of the day is an ideal summer routine for him. He LOVES cooler weather, if you're a cold weather fan and enjoy winter outdoor activities then he's your best buddy!!
Salem is your typical shadow Shepherd he will follow you from room to room and happily lay at your feet while you work at your desk, read or watch TV. However, he also does fine when left alone in his crate with something to do. Salem is a wonderful dog, I truly believe he's so big because he has such a huge heart and so much love to give.
