Grooming

Brushing/Shedding Coat

With a dense double coat, GSDs shed bits of hair constantly and is a seasonally heavy shedder when the dogs "blow coat" – a molting of all that dead winter (or summer) coat. Use a coat rake and a metal comb for the thicker coated GSD's and brush with the grain of the coat.

Bathing

German Shepherd Dogs only need baths occasionally. This is the case assuming that they are fed good quality food and brushed out and groomed on a regular basis. Baths should be given no more than once or twice a year to avoid drying out their skin

Ears

Your GSD's ears should be checked at least weekly and cleaned as necessary. Infections can result from yeast or bacteria that thrive in the canals and if left untreated ear infections can cause severe pain, and even hearing loss. Visit your vet for products that will clean dirt and ear wax from their ear canal.
When cleaning your dog's ears, remember to never insert anything into your dog's ear canal and especially No Q-TIPS.

Toenails

If your dog clickity clacks across the kitchen floor then it is time to trim their nails. For best results, it is best to trim off small amounts of the nail, a little bit at a time, instead of larger amounts all at once. Since the German Shepherd Dog's nails are usually very hard in density and are often very dark in color, the "quick" (blood and nerve supply) will often be hidden. If you were to cut the toenail too short it will be painful for your GSD and cause the nail to bleed.
