Foster Diary

Meet Jack. Jack is a running, jumping, loving, 100+ pounds worth of gorgeous black and tan German Shepherd. At just over a year old, there is a lot of puppy still in this big boy. His paw is as big as my two hands put together, so Jack is large and going to be even larger when fully mature. He goes through a 40-pound bag of food per week, and as you can see from the photos, he is not carrying any extra weight!

Jack

That’s because Jack is a dog who needs exercise, and a LOT of it, every single day. Jack’s perfect day would be three hours of running/walking on a trail, one hour of hard play with the other dogs, and the rest of the day lying quietly beside his owner. Jack loves to swim in the pond or the swimming pool, and is the perfect companion on a hike or a run. He’s especially good on a trail ride—even at such a young age, Jack is one of the best trail dogs I have ever had. He stays close to his owner and does not intrude on neighbors, cats or squirrels. Jack is your typical GSD in that he LOVES his owner and always likes to be near. Jack is also wonderful at the horse barn. He sits quietly while chores are completed and does not bark or herd the horses. Now if you aren’t an early riser, forget Jack. At 5:25 a.m. promptly, he’s ready for his day to start. All those barn chores are awaiting his supervision, after all! Plus he’s been soundly asleep since 9:30 p.m. the night before, never stirring. Jack eats freely and shares with five other dogs. He is not greedy and does not hover over the food. He gets along well with my other five dogs - no fighting or chasing. In fact, Jack is pretty much perfect as long as he has a large area to run and play ALL DAY. He sleeps next to my bed at night; however, he goes into the crate without any fuss. He currently uses a doggie door to come and go as he pleases. Without a doggie door, he has been known to apply his considerable smarts and, um, strength, to getting back inside. Remember, Jack is essentially a puppy in a very large body, with a puppy’s energy and limited manners. He needs a family or owner experienced with the needs of a large, young, dog who will correct him firmly but gently when he forgets his manners. Because of his size and exuberance, Jack would probably do best in a home with no children or with older children than have experience around large exhuberant dogs. We are starting to get Jack around kids more so that he learns self control around them. He improves a little each time and is learning to be quite affectionate with the young ones! We’re making progress on his manners and seeing that he is becoming quieter and less pushy. He sits, lays and heels. Jack will sometimes still jump up on people and does pull on the leash so commitment to on-going training is essential if you are considering adopting this big guy. We recommend obedience training for all of our dogs because of the wonderful bonding opportunity it offers, but with Jack this really is a “must do.” Jack is going to be a wonderful companion for the right family. So, if you are the active person or family who will make that commitment and want to share your life with this handsome fellow, you will be rewarded with a loyal trail buddy who’s up for that hike/run/ride whenever you are. Jack says “There’s an app for that…. so get yours in now!”
