Adoption/Application Fees
All of the dogs are up-to-date with their shots, have been tested for heartworms and intestinal parasites (and treated if necessary), and have been spayed or neutered. There is a $250 adoption fee to be applied towards the incurred medical bills and necessary administrative costs. The adoption fee is tax-deductible and assists the Rescue in saving more dogs. Note that there are extreme circumstances that postpone the sterilization of the dogs. An example of this would be a puppy who is too young to be altered. In this case, the $250 adoption fee is still applicable however there will be a $50 refund upon proof of spay or neuter. Spaying and neutering is a requirement of adoption and it WILL be enforced to prevent further contributions to the current pet overpopulation.
German Shepherds are wonderful pets and, like all animals, require a lifetime commitment: financially, emotionally, and physically. Potential homes are asked to commit to the above responsibility upon the completion of the adoption contract.
German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions is an all volunteer, non-profit organization. Our Federal employer identification number is 56-1857148. A portion of this fee may be tax-deductible; please consult your tax advisor.

Where Do the Fees Go?
It may surprise you to learn how much it costs a rescue to help a dog. Many of our dogs are taken in as strays, and we therefore have no health information on them at all. A visit to a vet includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following:
Office visit and general exam $40.00
Vaccinations, including DHLPP, rabies, Bordatella $30.00
Heartworm test $35.00
Fecal flotation and de-worming medecine $35.00
Spay or neuter $100-$150
Total $240-$280
These costs reflect money spent on "healthy" dogs; however, many of the dogs we take in have medical issues which require multiple vet visits and medications. Examples might be treatment for intestinal problems (fairly common in German Shepherds), treatment for tick borne diseases, treatment for sarcoptic or demodectic mange, etc.
In addition, heartworm preventative and flea and tick preventative must be purchased for each dog. Also, GSRA provides each dog with high quality dog food for the duration of the dog's time in a foster home.
And then there are the dogs that are heartworm positive... The costs of treating a dog for heartworm disease are steadily increasing. The "typical" heartworm treatment costs between $325 and $500.
Furthermore, if a dog has orthopedic problems, such as an injured leg or hip displaysia, diagnostic x-rays must be taken. Sometimes surgery is even necessary to ensure that the dog has a good quality of life.
Yes, we do occasionally take in a dog that does not cost GSRA much money. The adoption fees for those dogs are truly "gifts" to the rescue, in that they enable us to continue to help the "expensive" dogs. The sad truth is that without money, GSRA cannot continue to save dogs.
Please recognize that the adoption fee for each dog is crucial to GSRA's continued operation.
